If we deploy 8x8 Work app across our estate as an EXE installer does the app automatically update without the need to admin credentials.

Also if when updated does it ask for the Windows firewall check boxes (private, public domain etc) to be set again?

Reason I ask is that I have just manually downloaded and updated a client from v7.12 to v7.19 and it asked for the Windows firewall confirmation which generating a UAC prompt, needing an IT admin password as don't allow users to install apps.

We need to be able to have apps just auto update seamlessly, like Chrome for example. We cannot be walking/remotely around the PC estate inputting admin credentials in this way nor can we give user admin access on their PC.

How do you all deal with this?

This is absolutely an issue for my company as well. Very frustrating to get endless help desk tickets for admin prompts on 8x8 updates.

    Hello Mark,

Thank you for your reply. We are in the stage of deciding whether to go for 8x8. Whilst the core phone system meets our needs, it has been the apps causing the most concern.

I think I have under control at the moment in test. We will go for a per user "in person" rollout as the app looks to auto update itself. Jury is out on the UAC prompt for the firewall app

Out of interest, aside of the apps - how is the core phone system and the support around that. Do you have users raising issues regularly and have to contact support?

The core system seems solid, however that does not mean we are without problems. Just this morning I got a report from a field office of numerous dropped calls on their Poly VVX-350 phones. Asking around this seems to be happening in other offices and nobody reported it until now. A few months ago on a separate partner site it took days of agonizing troubleshooting to determine that some arcane firewall settings (SIP ALG and session timers) were the cause of call transfer failures and other call drops. Overall I'm not unhappy with the 8x8 service but IMO their network testing utility should have found these sorts of configuration issues before we deployed.

Team, the network utility test would have found your ALG issue (and since SRTP is enabled by default for quite some time ALG should not have been an issue unless you manually disabled the default setting).

As for the timer, that cannot be tested by any known testing software out, and would be surprised if one would make such a test. The recommended timers settings are published in our technical requirements document located here under the firewall rules.

    Hi Tim,

In situations where admins require permissions for users to install apps, 8x8 recommends using the Work for Web app

Check out the knowledge base article What is 8x8 Work for Web and how do I use it? to understand the limitations and how it may affect your environment.

The web version is designed to operate identical to the desktop app. Hope this helps in your evaluation.

Thank you Jahmal, I'm aware of the web app, however not used it much. It is a consideration and I have read through the limitations.

Do you work for 8x8? Or does 8x8 read the community.

One suggestion I would like to make is that the Windows firewall rules to be not prompted to be set again, if the rule were set at first install? Apologies if it already works like this, but working in IT you almost have to anticipate potential problems. We cant allow users to install their own apps, though it is good that the 8x8 app does allow users to install themselves in the first instance. We dont mind confirming the FW rules on first install, but every time the app updates, no thanks!

Not sure if 8x8 can confirm?

    Tim.

No problem Tim. I don't work for 8x8. They do read the community message and chime on discussions.

Another thought for your suggestion is to submit feedback to the app developers and even link this discussion. That way they can make changes based upon what's been brought up in this thread.

Tim, this suggestion has already been implemented in WorkD 7.16
